At the end of each semester, do you ever wonder if your grades will be OK? Do you have tests with different percentages, some of which appear to count more heavier then others? If so, the central question isn’t simply “What’s my average?” It’s this: What can I expect? In particular, you want to know if your grade is going to get wrecked by a bad final exam, or whether you need to ace it to achieve A.

Most students make following error: They mentally average their scores. That is, they treat a thirty percent unit test the same way they treat a ten percent quiz. That’s a mistake. Most people believe that their grade equal the sum of their efforts divided by the number of efforts. But that’s incorrect. Your grade is a weighted sum; size of effort is more important then the frequency.

How to Calculate Your Weighted Grade

Points mode vs. Percent mode are the first to know. Points mode is when your teacher assign you raw points (for example: eighty-five out of a possible one hundred). That single test carries as much weight as every midterm you took combined if the syllabus indicates it’s worth forty percent of your grade. This feature allow you to weigh the final exam different than your regular tests. This is critical because you don’t want to double count the final, both in the test list and then again in the final weight field.
