At the end of each semester, do you ever wonder if your grades will be OK? Do you have tests with different percentages, some of which appear to count more heavier then others? If so, the central question isnât simply âWhatâs my average?â Itâs this: What can I expect? In particular, you want to know if your grade is going to get wrecked by a bad final exam, or whether you need to ace it to achieve A.
Most students make following error: They mentally average their scores. That is, they treat a thirty percent unit test the same way they treat a ten percent quiz. Thatâs a mistake. Most people believe that their grade equal the sum of their efforts divided by the number of efforts. But thatâs incorrect. Your grade is a weighted sum; size of effort is more important then the frequency.
How to Calculate Your Weighted Grade
After entering your grading situation, the calculator do the rest of the math for you. No need to guess at conversions or coefficients. However, this is where the planning comes into play (understanding how the inputs works).
Points mode vs. Percent mode are the first to know. Points mode is when your teacher assign you raw points (for example: eighty-five out of a possible one hundred). Simply input both values and the tool will convert that to a percentage for you. Why? Because thatâs what levels your scores before weighing them. Without this step, a big test with a lot of points would weigh in on the average much heavier than, say, an easy test with fewer points. Remember, youâre looking at consistent performance here. You are not just looking at who has more point.
This weight can be the largest variable in the equation: the final exam. That single test carries as much weight as every midterm you took combined if the syllabus indicates itâs worth forty percent of your grade. This feature allow you to weigh the final exam different than your regular tests. This is critical because you donât want to double count the final, both in the test list and then again in the final weight field. With a plan of how well you expect to do on the final, the calculator will project what your new average would be with that score. You now have a realistic target.
Youâll also see exactly how many points you need to achieve a certain grade. If itâs more than one hundred percent, you know instantly that such a goal isnât achievable. Now instead of stressing out over an unattainable number, you start exploring alternative path.
Then there are some complexities with dropped tests. A lot of courses let you drop your lowest quiz score. That sounds like a great rule, right? But it change the denominator in the averaging equation. Dropped tests mean we remove their weight from the overall weight pool. That increases impact of whatâs left. The calculator make an adjustment for that as well. It keeps track so that weights of the remaining items add up correctly compared to the final exam. It is another little mechanical detail, but it counts towards accuracy. You donât want to think that a dropped low score realy impacts your average much when it is only a small consolation.
