Check the denominator. If the syllabus weights add to 100, use weights as entered. If you only know the graded portions so far, normalize them to compare current standing without treating future work as zero.
Use the cap honestly. A needed final of 104% can be possible with bonus points, but the realistic score cap makes it obvious when a target needs extra credit, a curve, or a reweighting rule.
