You feel panicky productivity because you began with an imprecise goal (e.g., âI want to spend more time studyingâ). A vague goal causes guilt rather than progress, it makes you feel guilty, not productive. Itâs hard to feel guilty about being lazy when your only real goal was something fuzzy.
Study time are a scarce resource that requires careful calculation; most people donât treat it as such. They assume they can somehow stretch out their study energy across some vague bucket until the test. Knowing precisely how many hours youâll need to catch up on material is the difference between studying in a way that lets you learn versus one that leave you cramming for exam.
How to Plan Your Study Time
After establishing that gap, the calculator (above) does math for you, transforming vague worry into a doable plan of attack, one week at a time. For starters, it asks: How much do you understand now? And how much do you want to get up to? Say youâre at a low 45 percent comprehension, yet feel like you should of be at 85 percent. Thatâs quite a jump, which the calculator understands isnât a gentle refresher, but a massive undertaking.
Then it adds in the complexity of the content. A moderate topic might require two and a half hours of focused work, but a proof-heavy lab course or dense memorization subject like anatomy demand significantly more time per chapter. Most folks underestimate this. All topics isnât equal. The tool accounts for that fact and tacks on multipliers based off how much brainpower each subject needs.
Choosing a method to retain it all is also very important. As the table of reference in the layout points out, spaced repetition is actualy more efficient (time-wise) than cramming. That means when you calculate how many hours of studying are necessary with cramming, the multiplier gets bigger. Youâre going to forget quicker, which requires more repetition to get back up to speed.
When you switch to interleaved practice or active recall instead, then that multiplier go down and you get more bang for every buck. In other words, youâre getting efficiency by making the study method harder now, so you donât have to study as much later.
It incorporates the realities of being a student, too: how many credits a class has, what percentage of their grade will be based on an exam. As a rule of thumb, most students must dedicate at least seven to nine hours each week towards staying above water in any three-credit class. Thatâs assuming theyâre cramming for an exam. Throw in the fact that this exam is worth 40% of their overall grade, and now you have a whole new ballgame.
The calculator takes all of this base workload, plus any additional practice necessary, such as mock problems. Timed essay sets!), and then shows you how to study differently, if need be, instead of simply telling you to study harder.
Breaking down those hours into a day-by-day chunk gives you an idea of whether or not the time frame is feasible. If itâs over three dedicated hours per day, chances are the schedule wonât stand up to its own weight.
The buffer gets ignored by many students. Shit happens. You fall ill. A social event comes up. You take longer than expected to grasp a tough concept. Thatâs not being pessimistic (thatâs survival). Add a ten to fifteen percent buffer. When the week goes sideways, this provides breathing room. Otherwise, a single bad day kills the whole weekâs momentum.
What does it give you? A total number of hours. It is more important to see how that total breaks down over time based on your available days. This forces you to deal with the trade-off between duration different than intensity. But ultimately itâs all about taking the guess out of planning in order to put yourself back into trusting the process.
Thereâs no more wondering if youâre doing enough. Thereâs no more stress about doing anything. You know what has to get done and for how long. Instead of guessing how many hours youâll have, the hours look different. Theyâre now measurable. This helps you create a schedule that respects your time. It doesnât demand that you give up all your time at once.
