Full Formula Breakdown

GoalFind the cumulative experience required to reach a given skill level L in Old School RuneScape.
Per-level termFor each n from 1 to L minus 1, compute floor(n + 300 × 2^(n/7)) and add it to a running total.
Final divideXP to reach L = floor( total ÷ 4 ). The single divide by four is applied only once at the end.
Current levelYour level is the highest L whose XP requirement is less than or equal to your current experience.
XP to nextXP to next level = XP required for (current level + 1) minus your current experience, floored at zero.
XP to targetXP to target = XP required for target level minus current experience. It is zero once you are already past the target.
Progress percentProgress in the current band = (current XP - level start XP) ÷ (next level XP - level start XP) × 100.
Check valuesLevel 2 = 83 XP, level 10 = 1,154, level 50 = 101,333, level 92 = 6,517,253 (half of 99), level 99 = 13,034,431.

💡OSRS XP Tips

Halfway tip: Level 92 requires 6,517,253 XP, which is exactly half of the 13,034,431 needed for level 99. Reaching 92 means the second half of the grind is still ahead of you.
Growth tip: XP requirements climb roughly exponentially because of the 2^(n/7) term. Each level needs about 4 percent more experience than the one before, so late levels dwarf the early ones.

When you see that you’re 10 percent shy of being at level 99 in some skill, even though it’s still many thousands of hours until you get there in terms of actual experence, something gnawing sort of fear creep over you. You have fallen into the all-too familiar player trap. The game says you’re just outside the door to mastery. But mathematically, you’re locked solidly in the trench warfare of endless grinding.

The reason for that disconnect is simple: The way the game work isn’t linear. Your efforts don’t translate directy to progress. In fact, the formula that dictates how skills advance slow down the closer you get to maximum levels. This means the last few level will take exponentially longer than the first dozen put together. That’s a learning curve that has nothing to do with remembering equations and everything to do with knowing what to expect before sitting down for another session of training.

Why Getting Level 99 Is So Hard

Now, you don’t have to perform the complicated mathematical calculations on your own, as long as you plug in your starting level or experience and let the calculator do all the work. It simplifies what you need for upcoming level and far-off goals. This turns numbers into a plan of action by calculating the exact amount of experience left until your desired goal. You can even enter in your expected hourly rate of experience gain, turning those huge numbers into real-world terms of time commitment.

Because I suspect most people vastly underestimate how much time they spend training every day. Seeing that it’ll still take another twelve thousand hours at this speed make you rethink your habits. It serves as a sharp reminder: “Okay, then, I guess it’s either pick up the pace somehow, or learn to enjoy life while progressing more slow.

One of the reasons so many new player trip up on their path is that they view leveling as a linear process. If it takes me two weeks to get from level thirty to level fifty, then it should take me four weeks to go from level fifty to level ninety. No. There’s a rapid growth term in underlying algorithm that penalizes late-game levelling by throwing up steeper experience walls. When you reach level eighty-five, you’ll find you’re paying a huge amount more for each additional level. It becomes extremely hard, demanding much more input than ever before.

Leveling up from eighty-five to eighty-six feel like a big accomplishment. That level represents exactly half of the total experience required for ninety-nine. You’ve won half of the grind once you hit level ninety-two. That mental win drive a lot of people to carry on past it. These milestones are laid out clearly in reference tables found on the page. This gives you a visual map of where you’re heading.

When you see that levels 80-90 represent an experience spike, you gain some context for how hard that’s going to be. It isn’t just a little bit harder to achieve; it’s a massive change in terms of time investment. Many players fail to account for this, burning out because their train doesn’t produce fast enough results anymore. With exact numbers of what’s left, the tool help ensure that you plan around your real-world constraints instead of fantasy timetables.

Can you reach a certain level during your upcoming holiday? Or maybe you’ll want scale back a bit. Beyond what you can see on screen, there’s also the fact that the two hundred million total experience cap exist well beyond level ninety-nine. Few players get anywhere near that, but it’s nice to know that the game is keeping score long after you’ve used up its visual incentives. If you’re going for maxed out characters, then it becomes about accumulating overall experience instead of increasing levels. And the calculator help you do just that: comparing potential skill goals side-by-side.

Maybe you’ll discover that getting an unused combat stat to level seventy would be easier than grinding out another four points of magic. The numbers don’t lie; they tell you exactly how you should of spend your time. But that’s not all tracking experience points are for, ultimately. They’re also for learning what ambition costs in a game where patience is everything. Because at the top end, each level comes exponentially harder-won.

When you use these tools to visualize the distance from your current self to your desired self, they don’t leave you feeling vaguely frustrated. They turn that frustration into tangible plans. They turn “Will this ever end?” into “How much longer do I have left?” And once you’ve seen the road clearly drawn ahead, one numbered step at a time, the looming fear of ninety-nine diminish.
