OSRS Melee Formula Breakdown

Boosted levelPotions add a flat amount plus a percent of the base level. Overload gives roughly +6 and 16% of the level before prayer.
Effective Strengthfloor(Strength × prayer str multiplier) + style Strength bonus + 8. Aggressive adds 3, Controlled adds 1.
Max Hitfloor(0.5 + effective Strength × (equipment Strength bonus + 64) / 640), then times any set-effect multiplier.
Effective Attackfloor(Attack × prayer atk multiplier) + style Attack bonus + 8. Accurate adds 3, Controlled adds 1.
Max Attack Rolleffective Attack × (equipment Attack bonus + 64), times any set-effect multiplier such as Void or Slayer helm.
Max Defence Roll(target Defence + 9) × (target Defence bonus + 64) for the style you are attacking with.
Hit chanceIf attack roll > defence roll: 1 – (defRoll + 2) / (2 × (atkRoll + 1)). Otherwise atkRoll / (2 × (defRoll + 1)).
Damage per secondAverage hit = hit chance × (max hit / 2). DPS = average hit / (attack ticks × 0.6 seconds).

💡DPS Optimisation Tips

Strength first: Once your accuracy is high, extra Strength levels and Strength bonus raise your max hit and DPS more than switching to a more accurate but weaker weapon. Aggressive style adds a hidden +3 Strength.
Match the style: Use the attack type your target is weakest to. Hitting slash on a monster with low slash Defence lifts your hit chance, which multiplies straight into DPS just like a bigger max hit does.

It’s you versus a giant. Your heart races as you click that first attack button. Damage numbers appear on the screen, and everything freezes for what feels like a split second. Did I do two damage? Or was it twelve? For each combat encounter in Old School RuneScape, this moment decides everything. DPS, damage per second, isn’t merely a number; it decide between life and death, between a final kill and a last breath.

This is the math of those floating damage numbers: the tick system, the attack style, the gear bonus, and level. Strength is typicaly viewed by most players simply as “hit harder,” but it’s only half the story. Accuracy decide how frequently you’ll connect with your attacks. Maximum hit decides how much damage you do if you manage to connect. The calculator above will crunch those numbers for you so long as you input your own unique set-up of gear.

How to Improve Your Damage in Old School RuneScape

No more guesswork; do I want to spend runes on this or that? Do I get the extra one percent prayer bonus or no? You have to find this balancing act between the two elements. If your accuracy gets too low against high-defence monsters, then your huge max hit doesn’t matter: you’re going to be missing half of your swings anyway. It’s not just force of blow that matters, it’s the stability.

There’s also a new level of strategy with weapon speed that many newer players tend to gloss over: an abyssal whip is a fast weapon, hitting on each of the four ticks, whereas a godsword are slower at six ticks but hits harder per hit. There is some trade-off there between raw damage output and being able to interrupt enemies’ special attacks. On top of that, it allows you to keep yourself going better with fewer clicks per minute. The tool translates that into seconds and actual DPS numbers. This lets you see more clearly which weapon fit your playstyle for a specific fight.

This is where a lot of builds veer away from theory into practical reality: Prayers. While melee typicaly goes with piety due to the largest multipliers on both attack and strength, there’s no such thing as free runestones that grow on trees. Do you really want to spend the resources on those runes instead of teleportation tablets or food? When does that small increase in damage make it worthwhile? Does it at all? The page has a handy table of reference showing how each prayer scales based off your level.

And it reminds us that having the best possible gear doesn’t happen in a vacuum. What works for your character at any point in time depend upon your budget and your available resources.

The other wrinkle here comes from potions: They stack with the prayer multipliers and also boost your effective levels. So, combining Piety with a better combat mix will do far more then provide a flat increase: The percentage bonuses are amplified, which leads to a compounding effect that greatly increases your max hit. However, if you’re currently only missing one or two attacks, there’s a diminishing return here. You won’t be doing any more damage per second by adding more strength when you’re already one-shotting the monster. First find out what is slowing down your current setup before you should of spend a lot on the bonus.

Players aren’t as aware of importance of the target’s defence level. Higher defence means they’re tougher to hit, so accuracy becomes more important than straight-up strength. This changes focus from strength-only gear to balanced builds that includes higher hit chance. You can enter the target’s exact defence bonus into the calculator for an accurate prediction (rather than just best case scenario). For example, during a boss fight, it only takes one missed tick to alter the result completely.

Long story short: Combat optimization isn’t all about maxing out a bunch of numbers. It’s learning how each of those numbers relates to both in-game time and the time you take to make decisions. Having confidence in your next attack… Whether it’s for sheer enjoyment, exp gain, or maximizing profit, is something that even raw power cannot replace. You click, you hit, and you know exactly why.
