Joint tip: A thicker mortar joint enlarges each brick footprint, so fewer bricks fill a square foot. Going from a 3/8 in to a 1/2 in joint drops modular density from about 6.86 to 6.44 per square foot, roughly 6 percent fewer bricks.
Waste tip: Always add 5 to 10 percent to the bare count for cuts, corners, and breakage. Complex layouts with many openings or a herringbone pattern lean toward the higher 10 percent allowance.
