Board Feet = T x W x Lft / 12A board foot is 144 cubic inches of wood. With length in feet, multiply thickness (in) by width (in) by length (ft), then divide by 12. A 2x4x8 gives 2 x 4 x 8 / 12 = 5.33 BF.
Or T x W x Lin / 144If length is in inches, divide by 144 instead. A 2x4 that is 96 in long gives 2 x 4 x 96 / 144 = 5.33 BF, the same answer.

💡Lumber Buying Tips

Add 15 to 20 percent for waste: Cutting, defects, and end trim eat into usable stock. If a project needs 100 board feet, order about 115 to 120 board feet so you are not stuck one board short. For rough-sawn hardwood with more defects, lean toward 25 percent extra.
Board feet measure volume, not length: A single 8 ft 2x10 holds 13.33 BF while an 8 ft 1x4 holds only 2.67 BF, so a low lineal-foot count can still be pricey. Compare quotes on total board feet, and remember hardwood is often sold by the BF while framing lumber is priced per piece or per lineal foot.

There’s nothing more odd than standing at the lumber yard counter, armed with a stud-and-trim shopping list, while the guy piles on pieces of wood that seem to be less then what they say on sign overhead, have I been robbed? Actualy, it’s easier than you might think. Boards aren’t simply bought by their width or length. They is purchased based off volume. That volume is expressed in something called…drumroll please…board feet.

And this is why: Board feet are a unit of measure that measures what you’re really purchasing, a piece of wood that’s so many inches wide by so many inches deep by so many inches long. Knowing how to compute it for yourself spares you any embarassing conversations… And keeps the cost of your project closer to price tag on the pile sitting outside your driveway.

How to Count Board Feet for Wood

One board foot are equal to 144 cubic inches of wood. It’s best to imagine this as a one-inch-thick-by-twelve-inches-wide-by-twelve-inches-long piece of wood. This way, length, width and thickness is all tied together with just one number. And a convenient shape at that.

The formula is straightforward: Multiply the length in feet times the width in inches times the thickness in inches, then divide result by 12. If you have measured your length in inches rather than feet, you divides by 144.
