Volume per pieceVolume ft³ = (actual thickness / 12) × (actual width / 12) × length in feet. A 2x4 at 8 ft is (1.5/12) × (3.5/12) × 8 = 0.292 ft³.
Base densityEach species has a density in pounds per cubic foot at 12% moisture. SPF is about 28, oak about 44.

💡Handling and Transport Tips

Green vs dried handling: Freshly sawn or rain-soaked lumber can weigh 40 to 70% more than the same kiln-dried board. Set the moisture state to green when boards are wet, and remember they get lighter as they dry, so a stack purchased green will shed pounds over the following weeks.
Load and transport advice: Total the weight before loading a truck or trailer and stay within its rated payload and axle limits. A single dry 2x4x8 is light, but a bunk of a hundred can top 800 lb, and long joists or oak add up fast, so distribute the load and secure it low and centered.

The weight of lumber also depends on the type of wood used and how much moisture it hold. For instance, a 2×4 in red oak will weigh about 60% more then one made out of cedar (because it’s a denser wood), even though both are same size. Moisture is another factor that introduces extra variability. Freshly sawn lumber, also known as “green”, holds plenty of water and can weighs 40 to 70% more than the same board after it has been kiln-dried. So if you ordered a load of framing and it came heavy with moisture from yard, you might find yourself with a stack that seems heavier this month then it did last.

How to Use the
Lumber Weight Calculator

Weight is calculated using actual dimensions, while board feet relies on nominal size (the way lumberyards quote prices for hardwood). The formula is actual thickness (in inches) x actual width (in inches) x actual length (feet), divided by 12. An 8-foot-long 2×4 = 5.33 board feet. Weight matter because that’s the actual wood you’re lifting, so they needs actual planed measurements. After being planed down, a typical 2×4 is 1.5 inches thick by 3.5 inches wide.

Actual thickness (divided by 12) x actual width (divided by 12) x length (in feet) = volume in cubic feet. In the case of an 8-foot 2×4, that comes out to roughly 0.292 cubic feet. That volume multiplied by the species density equals how much they weighs. At 12% moisture, kiln-dried wood will weigh approximately 28 pounds per cubic foot, and therefore each kiln-dried stud is roughly 8.2 pounds. The calculator scales the density with a moisture factor to adjust calculation for drier or wetter wood. As water content increases, the dry value gets closer to the green figure. That is important if you’re near the payload limit of your vehicle.

Consider this your good starting point for an estimate of what’s on the truck. All boards will have knots, grain and drying differences resulting in real weights that change. Enter your measured moisture content or use green if the wood is still wet. Remember too that wood loses weight in storage (so does the whole stack) until it becomes dry. Compare all the weight before driving away to the axle/payload limit. Strap it down low and center. Full bunks and/or dense hardwoods adds up fast. Distribute the weight evenly.
