Tip Calculator
Calculate a tip from the chosen basis, handle tax separately or inside the bill, split totals cleanly, and compare common service ranges.
Use the charge you want to start from before optional drink or item add-ons.
The service type loads a reference range and suggested starting percent.
Final percent equals this value plus the service quality adjustment.
This adjusts the percent used in the exact tip formula.
If tax is separate, total = bill + tip + tax.
Used to estimate pre-tax basis or add separate tax.
Per person = total divided by split ways, after selected rounding.
Rounding is applied after the raw formula so the math stays visible.

But then comes that moment: The check is on the table. Your eyes dart around between your friendsâ faces, the bill total, and the tax amount. Your pressured brain does some mental math. How much should you leave? Be generous, but donât waste it. Be fair, but donât be cheap.
Itâs easier if you have a clear plan of attack. With that in mind, our tip calculator do the hard work for you. Plug in your bill info and itâll do the rest. You wonât have to fumble with percentages. This lets you tip confidentally and know exactly what those numbers mean.
How to Use Our Tip Calculator
How does the tax play into this? Should you tip based off the pre-tax total? A lot of folks believe that since sales tax is paid to the government, they shouldnât count it when calculating their tips. While thatâs true in most locations, what happens when thereâs no sales tax (hello, states)? What about when the pricing isnât clear and there is multiple taxes listed? You can select which version of tax you want included in your tip calculations. That way, you know exactly what youâre tipping for: service or the stateâs tax money. If your receipt has tax already figured in, you can use the pre-tax basis option to get an approximation of actual food cost. This helps you stay under budget without underpaying anyone.
Hospitality comes in many different flavors. Not all service are created equal. Would you give a gratuity at a self-serve coffeeshop? No. Do you pay tips if someone has topped off your water glass every 15 minutes for the last hour? Yes. Does a sit-down meal with a server, tasked with attending to your every need, deserve a larger percentage? Of course. Is delivery pizza, something that simply needs to be picked up and carried home, worth less than? Absolutely. So why would we expect the same rules to apply across all scenarios? Thatâs where the breakdown of categories, per page of reference data, helps.
It forces us out of rigid thinking: âI paid a dollar, itâs good.â Instead, it says, âThis person spent their time waiting outside in the rain for me. I should of thank them.â Being generous is about context. Oftentimes the rigidity of rules fails because it discounts human element behind the gesture.
But thereâs also the added hassle of splitting bill. Rarely will this work even in your mind. Four friends split a drink and some appetizers, easy: divide by four! One friend had only water while someone else downed three cocktails? Round up or round down? Odds are most people round to the nearest dollar so no one has to ask for odd change. If everyone rounds down, it stings. Round up and youâre making sure the server gets what he/she earn.
And you can still vary your tip according to the quality of the service. If your server went above and beyond, add a couple percent. Things didnât go right? Drop the percentage but donât be harsh. Tipping is naturaly a group dynamic, which makes it feel transactional instead of appreciative. Youâre all eager to get out of there and pay the check ASAP.
Calculating the correct amount is an act of respect toward those that waited on you. It forces you to consciously decide how much to tip instead of making it a chore. Whether youâre at a fine dining restaurant or a dive bar, the same principle applies. Youâre not just buying food; youâre paying someone for their care and attention. When you know exactly how much to give, it takes away the sting of handing over cash. It replaces guilt with gratitude, which will make entire experience smoother for everyone.
