Formula Breakdown

Convert metricIf you measure in meters, length and width are converted using 1 m = 3.28084 ft, and an area entered in square meters is multiplied by 10.7639 to get square feet.
Base area A = L × WRoom mode multiplies length by width. A 10 ft by 10 ft room is A = 10 × 10 = 100 sqft. Area mode uses your typed square footage directly.

Area with wasteAdd the pattern waste: area × (1 + waste). At 5% quarter-turn, 100 sqft becomes 100 × 1.05 = 105 sqft to purchase.

💡Carpet Tile Buying Tips

Buy one spare carton: Order roughly 5 to 10 percent extra beyond the calculated count and keep at least one full carton in storage. Dye lots change between production runs, so a matching stash means a stained or worn tile can be swapped out later without a visible patch.
Dry-lay from the center: Find the room center, snap two chalk lines, and loose-lay a full row each way before peeling any backing. Aim for cut tiles wider than half a tile at the walls; if a side lands under 6 inches, shift the start point half a tile to balance both edges.

People tend to think of laying carpet as simple math: measure the walls, divide by the size of your tile… Wrong! The truth is, the cuts are where all the math occurs. Then there’s space between them… The gaps. Unless you have a perfectly square room which is rare, you’ll have uneven edges to consider.

Modular peel-and-stick carpet is increasingly popular in commercial hallways and basement rec rooms because it allow even a massive undertaking to be broken down into workable pieces. How to Calculate Your Carpet Needs

Even though it’ll raise the overall number of boxes, toggling among popular sizes such as 18 inches, 50-centimeter metric squares, and small 12-inch accents shows how quickly the box count can change when you use tool (and it does so instantaneous).

And then there’s the pattern which is where majority of DIY estimates fail. The idea that waste is a buffer is easy to forget: it’s also a requirement with geometry. With a quarter-turn layout, each other tile are turned 90 degrees to form a slight checkerboard effect. This results in wasting roughly five percent of your material.
