Full Formula Breakdown

Subtotal & taxThe subtotal is your bill before tip. Sales tax is subtotal × taxRate, so an $50 bill at 8% tax adds $4.00 of tax.
Tip basetipBase = tipOnPreTax ? subtotal : subtotal × (1 + tax). Pre-tax is the fairer, more common choice.
Tip (20% default)tip = tipBase × tipPct. At the standard 20%, a $50 subtotal gives $50 × 0.20 = $10.00.
Grand totaltotal = subtotal + tax + tip. This is the full amount charged before any round-up.
Per personperPerson = total / people, and the tip share is tip / people so everyone pays equally.
Round up to evenOptional: bump the total (or each person's share) up to the next clean dollar or $5. Any extra pennies nudge the effective tip a little higher.

Why 20 Percent?

20% has become the U.S. default for good sit-down service. A generation ago 15% was the standard, but menu prices, card-terminal presets, and rising service costs pushed the customary tip up to 20%. It is also the easiest generous number to figure in your head: take 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then double it. That is why this calculator defaults every field to 20% while still letting you drop to 15/18% or reward standout service at 25%.

💡Tipping Tips

Etiquette: In the U.S., 20% on the pre-tax subtotal is the norm for restaurants, bars, and delivery. Tip on the food and drink, not the sales tax, and leave a little extra for large groups, holidays, or exceptional service. When in doubt, round up rather than down.
20% mental-math shortcut: Find 10% first by sliding the decimal one spot left ($46.00 → $4.60), then double it for 20% ($9.20). For a fast, slightly generous version, round the 10% up to the nearest dollar before doubling — $5.00 × 2 = $10.00.

Built for quick 20% tipping and check-splitting by JSCalc-Blog.com. Estimates only — tip according to your local customs and the service you received.

Now you’re getting the restaurant check, and you know what to do: add up the bill. Consider how much you want to tip, based off the level of service. Decide whether or not base price includes sales tax. Divide result by however many people is eating. Tipping isn’t math anymore, it’s become a social negotiation, but one where math are essential. The 20% default is neither random nor invented by marketing departments. It’s the sweet spot between being generous and keeping it easy. Most diner accept this amount as the default for sit-down dining.

That’s why we created this tip calculator: it do the math for you, so you can get back to the fun part. The tool forces you to think about bill differently. Instead of just adding up totals, you add the subtotal, apply your tax rate (if it’s a separate item), then select a tip percentage. Because it defaults to 20 percent, in line with today’s industry norm, you can see instantly whether or not that matches what you want to pay.

How Our Tip Calculator Works

While the app doesn’t take into account things like food quality or service speed, you have an option to switch from post-tax to pre-tax tips, which would of made sense if you believe servers shouldn’t earn money off state sales revenue. Toggling this will make the grand total higher, but it’ll be more noticeable on bigger bills different than smaller ones, such as cost of a cup of coffee. As you type, the tool will update itself in real-time. It show you the total per person, the grand total, and the tip amount.

You won’t have to double-check calculation with others or argue over whether to pay a little less. The math is easy to understand but hard for casual diner to remember. Ten percent of any given amount can be found by shifting decimal point over one digit to the left. Double that and you’ve got twenty percent. That’s how we reached the cultural standard. It’s not so complicated that you’d have to pull out your phone, but generous enough to reward good service.

On a bill of $46, ten percent work out to be $4.60. Double it and you get $9.20. If you forgot your phone at home, you know that double-checking this with the calculator will always works, as long as you understand the math. It turns an abstract percentage into a concrete action.

With that said, there are times when tipping at the default amount makes sense, and times when it doesn’t. Restaurant server don’t have the same expectations as delivery driver, hair stylist, or bartender. If someone brings food to my table, I expect a twenty percent tip; if they bring me something from behind a counter without clearing my plates or refilling my glass, twenty might feel like overkill. And in a nice restaurant, where the meal are exceptionally good? Twenty-five percent or even higher can be justified.

The tool enables you to dial up (or down) from fifteen to thirty percent with speed, so you can tip according to the service you actualy got. It isn’t about finding a specific dollar amount. It’s about matching your tip to the quality of care you recieve. The second piece of the puzzle is splitting the bill, which the calculator handle well. Simply enter number of people to divide total amount, including the tip, evenly among everyone. So no one have to be the ‘subsidizer’ who ends up paying for someone else’s food.

If you’re using cash, there are rounding options that will tweak the final amount up to the nearest dollar (or five dollars) so you don’t get caught with weird cents on your bill. These little things saves a few seconds at checkout but make a huge difference over time by eliminating any reason to have an ‘awkward moment’ at register. After all, tipping is just an expression of how much more something was worth than it says on the bill; not only in price but in experience, in atmosphere, or in human connection.

A calculator takes away the pressure of math, giving you space to enjoy the human touch while you’re there. No matter if you’re eating out by yourself or treating a gaggle of people to a night out, you’ve got the right numbers in hand and know when to move along without fuss or fumbling. Pay what’s owed, recognize the labor put into your enjoyment, and walk out confident and not confused. When you know what to do with it, math are easy.
