Then it dawns on you that an exam is coming up in a few days, but you haven’t been studying. Panic sets in. It is not because you’re afraid of failing. It is because you don’t know what to do with yourself. You’re unstructured, but you don’t like being unstructured. You don’t have a plan. Most student won’t take the time to plan out exactly what they want to cover and for how long. The problem is almost always a lack of planning rather than a lack of willingness.
Your brain also tends to underestimate amount of effort involved. If you’re stressed, you’ll tend to overestimate your ability to cram four hours worth of work into two hours. Stress make you think you can get more done with less time.
Why You Need a Study Plan
That’s why you need a system, one that will calculate how many hours you actualy have. It distinguishes between what you want to do (pass) and what you can actually do (your schedule). After entering your list of topics, and setting a deadline, the calculator crunches numbers. No more guessing. Spend your time studying rather than thinking about how much time to study.
What’s important is what goes in, not what comes out. The good thing about system is that it breaks down your plan into chunks. Treat each topic like its own debt. Some debts is big. Some debts are little. Use the tool to prioritize your topics. A lot of people make all topics equal weight, sounds fair right? Equal is not equitable. If you aced the intro classes but are struggling with organic chemistry, then the mechanisms should gets a heavier weighting. The tool will automatically allocate more hours to weak areas. You won’t be wasting precious energy on stuff you already understand.
You don’t get all the days. Some days aren’t available for studying. If you have a game, you can’t study on Sunday. If you have work, you can’t study on Wednesday. Your available time shrinks when you block off these days. Ignore them and you’re shooting for an impossible daily target. The calculator accounts for your true number of available days. Then it makes you set a daily limit. How much can your brain handle? There’s a limit to how much it can take in. If you tell the tool that it needs to study for six hours a day and you only want to cap yourself at three, it tells you the plan isn’t feasible. That warning allows you to adjust. Maybe you have to cut the scope. Or maybe you would of had to extend the deadline.
Overhead matters too. You’ve got thirty hours of new material. Memorization doesn’t happen in a single sitting. If you don’t revisit your material and move it from short-term to long-term memory, you’ll forget it quickly. The spaced review helps you with that. This is the time spent on flashcards or rereading notes. The reference tables is helpful here so you can figure out how much review you should do. Less if you have a longer deadline. More if you have a shorter one. Less practice if you’re trying to cram for a two-day crunch. More if you have a two-week deadline.
You need to take breaks. Every hour or so. I find a good ratio is 50 minutes on, 10 minutes off. You can only focus for so long. Spend four consecutive hours studying and your brain waste the final two. The calculator takes this into account when counting sessions. So it builds breaks in the session counts.
That’s why an achievable plan feels doable. But one that punishes feel punishing. Lastly, review the feasibility output. This will show you if your daily cap can match the pace you need. Does it say you’re over capacity? Don’t cut out sleep. Your brain consolidates memories during sleep. Reducing sleep time for studying won’t increase your efficiency. Use the tool to cut the topics instead. Eliminate the low-priority ones. Study the high-weight ones. You’ll understand half of the syllabus well, that’s superior to skimming through everything.
You want to study efficienty. Seeing these numbers will reduce the panic. You’ll trade anxiety for a schedule. A schedule is a promise you made to yourself.
