The moment the exam paper hits your desk, the clock begins ticking. Itās tempting to go outside and guess your score based off how stressed you feel. You might think, āI knew all that stuff, so I must be doing really well,ā even while worrying about that hard thermodynamics section. āDid that cost me points?ā Did I make the right call by skipping that one? Should of I known it?ā
Scoring mechanics like this can swing an A-B difference, which is why we rarely intuitively understand how they work. Until you take them apart, itās not always obvious what your teacher will do when she add up the digits. Knowing the rules is only half the battle; learning how your instructor does it is just as vital.
How Test Grading Works
Most students assume that a multiple choice test are just simple binary math. Right equals good; wrong equals bad. But they fail to account for strange structure of their grading policy. Maybe thereās a penalty for wrong answers, to disincentivize random guesses? Maybe thereās partial credit for getting some things right, so long as you show your work. Even if you pick the wrong option in the end?
Once you input your specific set of rules, the calculator do the math for you. It spares you the guesswork of whether it is worth taking the risk on a penalty. Translates vague worry into cold, hard figures.
Blindly guessing becomes a negative expected value deal if the test carries a quarter-point penalty per wrong answer. You are essentially gambling against the house. Unless you know with certainty that you can eliminates at least one option, the odds arenāt in your favor.
This brings us to the expected value. On an average four-option problem with no penalty, a guess has a 25% probability of being correct and therefore netting you a full point. Failing to make any guess at all will guarantee you get nothing. Over time that expectation can pile up.
But once the penalty equals one divided by the number of choices, the math turns against you. Thereās no reason to blindly guess when thereās no reward for doing so. The table on the page spells it out. Depending on which number of options you have (two, four, or five), thereās a different penalty threshold where you need to just walk away. It is a tiny detail, yes. But it makes a world of difference in how you should approach the test.
Mathematically speaking, itās fine to take a shot in the dark if youāre between two answer. If youāve got five to choose from with no clue as to which one is correct, though, then you might as well leave it blank; youāll save yourself a few points.
Thereās also the added level of partial credit. A lot of todayās edtech products rewards students with points for showing partial knowledge⦠Even when they donāt quite nail the end result. That alters the cost/risk of taking the test. Knowing youāll recieve half a point for an incorrect but related response, for example, reduces the penalty of getting it wrong.
To account for that, the product allow you to enter any custom partial credit value so that your final score shows how that question was graded and not some dumbed down right/wrong metric. It also enables you to see the consequences of skipped answers. An unanswered question isnāt nothing. It means a missed chance to guess intelligently.
A test score carries with it so much more than its numerical value. We attach our self-worth to those little percentage points. We lose sight of the fact that one test is just one data point on a long academic story. But itās one data point, and it lets you know precisely where you are. Are you three questions off from your goal? Youāll see that clearly. That takes the mystery out of it.
You no longer sit there wondering whether or not you passed. Now you know exactly how close (or far) you were to that line. The goal isnāt just to get a good grade, but to understand the game being played.
If youāre in school and thereās a graded test at the end of class that contributes to a cumulative semester grade then yes, you may still be nervous. But at least you know how this works. Under the hood, the mechanics is clear.
Perhaps youāre nervous because you have a specific cut-off point (pass/fail) for a certification exam? Sure, that can make things interesting. However, if youāve learned what the mechanics are, you wonāt guess. Youāll have the data. The arithmetic will take away the anxietey.
