How The Fun Guess Is Built

Conception dateIf you pick LMP, conception is estimated as LMP plus 14 days, the usual ovulation window.
Julian DayThe date is converted to a Julian Day number (JD) so the moon age math works across any century.
Moon ageMoon age = (JD − 2451550.1) modulo 29.530588853 days, measured from a known new moon epoch.
Phase and lightThe age maps to one of 8 phases. Illumination = (1 − cos(2π × age / 29.53)) / 2.
Phase leanEach phase carries a fixed folklore boy-score. Waxing phases lean boy, full and waning phases lean girl.
Lunar age twistEven mother lunar age subtracts boy points, odd adds them. Chinese reckoning adds one year first.
Final scorePoints are clamped to 10–90. A boy-score of 50 or more shows Boy, otherwise Girl, with a fun confidence.

💡Good To Remember

Folklore, not medicine: Moon phase gender lore is a fun old tradition with no scientific backing. Every pregnancy has a genuine 50/50 chance of boy or girl no matter the moon.
Only a scan confirms: A mid-pregnancy ultrasound around 18–20 weeks, or a genetic test, is the only reliable way to learn sex. Enjoy this calculator as a game while you wait.

It’s an old wives tale, with no science to back it up, but it persists: the phase of the moon during conception supposedly determines your baby’s gender. There may be no biology involved, as lunar cycles has no role in sex chromosome determination. However, there’s plenty of folklore. And what could feel more significent?

This tool take dates as input, converts them to moon phases, and uses the old rules to provide a fun guess. It’s really just a simple concept: According to traditional folklore, a boy baby is conceived during the “waxing” phase (as light increases) whereas a girl baby tend to be conceived during the “waning” (diminishing light) phase. The idea is that more energy is linked to male life, while less energy is linked to female life.

Moon Phase Baby Gender Guess

To find out if your conception day falls into either category, go ahead and plot it on the chart. Not sure when exactly you conceived? Figure it out (add 14 days onto start of your last period). This will allow for some wiggle room, in case you weren’t tracking ovulation like a champ.

If that’s not enough complication, certain traditions takes into account the mother’s age. Want to know if yours is odd or even? That may tip the prediction one way or another. In any case, you have the option of selecting traditional Chinese lunar age calculation (which adds an extra year to reflect time spent in womb) versus Western age calculation via the calculator. It’s an acknowledgment that different cultures marks life’s milestones differently.

When you combine those two variables, you’re creating one result: the sky over your head and the timeline of your own life. But keep in mind how this was create. This thing give a predicted gender and how confident it is in that prediction, but don’t confuse that number with a measure of medical probability. That number is an entertainment metric meant to give your experience of playing the game that feeling of certainty.

In reality, your chances of giving birth to a boy or girl are still 50/50 no matter how the moon looks. What decides chromosomes is sperm, and as far as humans can tell, this is purely random. The moon doesn’t have any sort of pull on our DNA, just tides, and its impact on those are pretty subtle when you consider the impact of the atmosphere.

It’s easy to understand why people love this kind of thinking, since pregnancy means: waiting. And waiting opens up a place for speculation. Every clue counts when you don’t have the answer. A full moon must be an important thing! The associations aren’t biological facts, just psychological comforts. That’s why they’re all listed in a reference table on the page.

The table goes from the new moon, a dark beginning, through to the full moon, a bright end. Flip through the table and note where folklore changes more quicker as light changes. Remember that this is more like a story book than a guide to what’s happening.

So really, what’s this all about? This allows you to play with these older traditions in a low stakes way. You can see how changing one variable (age method/date) shifts the results. That adds some whimsy to the waiting period between when you’re wondering and when the ultrasound tells you the actual answer, which probably won’t have anything to do with the lunar calendar.

While you wait, it’s harmless fun to look up and guess. The moon will keep on going no matter what the prediction says, and we can enjoy looking at this question through its light without letting it block out the reality that follows. You should of seen the results before.
