Use the formula mode for elapsed time. The core result is days elapsed = floor((target date - start date) / 86400000), which excludes the start date.
Use inclusive mode for date ranges. If a report covers July 1 through July 31, inclusive counting returns 31 dates because both endpoints are part of the range.
Keep holidays separate from weekends. A holiday only reduces business days when it falls on one of the selected workdays and holiday exclusion is turned on.
Use signed output for direction. A negative value means the target date is before the start date; absolute mode is better for age, gap, or distance comparisons.

What about months? Months are problematic on a calendar. They have twenty-eight or thirty-one days, which change back and forth and are terrible for accurate math. So the calculator average the Gregorian month at roughly thirty point four days to provide a ballpark.

It does not provide second-to-second accuracy, but it provides consistency of measurement when estimating across time. Weeks are good for cadence; months are good for high level estimation.
