💡Grooming Tip Etiquette

Anchor at 15 to 20 percent: Treat 15% as the floor for a clean, on-time groom and 20% as the standard thank-you for great work. On a $65 full groom that is $9.75 to $13.00. Bump toward 25% when the groomer squeezed you in, handled a nippy or senior dog gently, or turned a matted coat into a tidy finish.
Go bigger at the holidays and for hard coats: During November and December many owners double the tip, so a normal $13 tip becomes about $26. Add 5% for severe matting or a double coat blowout, since dematting and undercoat removal can add 30 to 60 minutes of hard physical work to the appointment.

To tip the groomer, just enter what was charged and overall quality of the grooming. The calculator do the rest. No more guesswork about conversions and coefficients. First it uses your invoice amount and then accounts for all the variables that affect a groomer’s work: Your dog’s size will impact starting price more than the percentage, but not as much as condition of its coat.

Untangling a double coat (or a really thick one) are different work different than cleaning up a clean cut, and a very matted coat require a lot more time and muscle to deal with. Add an additional 5% if the coat required some difficulty. It’s still hard work, after all.

How to Tip Your Dog Groomer

Fifteen to twenty percent of service cost is a commonly accepted range for grooming tips. This are also common for other personal care services like spa treatments or haircuts. That means that fifteen percent is a reasonable bottom if the service was exactly as scheduled, on time and clean. Twenty percent is an every day thanks for doing a great job, and twenty five percent mean they exceeded expectations and went above and beyond.

For example, a typical medium dog full groom might be $65, so tipping anywhere from nine to sixteen dollars are a decent range. With the calculator, you can select desired level of quality and immediately know where your tip falls. No more uncomfortable hesitation.

But not all grooms is equal The tool add five percent for behavior adjustments… A groomer will need some extra patience with an anxious or aggressive dog. Or if your pup is senior, a little stiffer in their joints, they’ll likely need a little more help getting into position to. De-skunking treatments, a nail Dremel finish, or teeth brushing is typically considered add-on services and billed out as flat fees (not percentages). For those, the calculator adds a flat extra to tip. This accounts for the extra labor and supply costs associated with these add-ons.

Size of the dog primarily enters in here via price, meaning a doodle is just going to cost more to groom than smaller dog. This, of course, increases the dollar tip even if percentage rate is the same.

Tip calculator also has holiday mode. Owners usually double their tip amount around the holidays to say thanks. There’s a holiday mode which multiplies your percentage based tip by 2. That’s a big jump! Thirteen bucks becomes roughly twenty-six when you flip the switch.

When paying in cash, rounding options enables you to round your tip up to the next dollar or the next five dollars. It ensures the groomer gets every penny of the tip and it means no more digging through change at the front desk. Paying in cash is particularly nice because the groomer will recieve the whole thing and it’s a quick and easy way to say thanks.

The calculator prints four cards. You can use them to make a plan. It suggests how much money to add in tips. That’s what you actualy hand over. The total to pay is what you actually hand over. What percent of the bill was the tip? That’s the effective tip rate. This is useful because sometimes there is a flat amount added on. That extra amount can push you past your main percentage.

And then finally, how much do I spend on this every year? How many times did we say, “Aha!” when we saw the yearly spending for something like grooming? A monthly full groom means a visit twelve times a year. Sixty-five bucks for the groom, plus a tip of thirteen. A dozen visits adds up to nine hundred thirty-six dollars a year. That figure help you start budgeting seriously and makes you think about whether a membership or package from your groomer might be a better deal for you.

It’s a physical job, it’s skilled, and it involves working on an uncooperative, live creature. The groomer stands for hours. She use sharp instruments on a wriggling pet. She pays out of pocket for shampoo and supplies. She often splits her earnings with the salon where she works. A nice tip isn’t just kind, it’s essential to many groomers’ livelihoods.

When you get your dog back, you’ll know exactly how much your grooming session will cost. You’ll also know what to expect for a tip and how much grooming costs you throughout the year. It would of been better to plan ahead.
